The Project “”UC Interdisciplinary Research Centers 2013-2016″ brings together researchers from Faculties of Physics, Chemistry and Engineering of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile which are linked to the Center. Researchers take part in three research lines:

  • Nanomaterials of Energetic and Environmental Interest: This line studies problems related to the development of renewable energies and environment control. One of its aims is to explore the manufacturing parameters of an efficient photocatalyst based on hybrid nanostructures made up of carbon nanotubes decorated with hematite, titanium dioxide or copper oxides. In relation to environment, researchers do research on the application of nanomaterials in treatment systems and remediation. It is considered: Advanced oxidation processes (AOP) from organic compounds to CO2 (mineralization), usage of Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron (nZVI) for water remediation and the study of environmental nanomaterials reactivity for its application in environment control systems.
  • Nanomaterials of Biomedical Interest: This line is focused on the study of bionanomaterials and biocompatible materials. Researchers study the biophysical properties of dynamics of both organic films and lipid membranes adsorbed on solid surfaces. They also use nano-sized crystal of diamonds and nanoporous alumina membranes as the basis of biomolecule detectors or cellular processes. Moreover, the development of new biocompatible materials is studied.
  • Technological Properties of Advanced Materials: Researchers study problems related to corrosion and functionalization of materials. In relation to corrosion, researchers do research on the characterization and modelling of the corrosion process of metallic materials, the study of microstructural impact on technological properties of shape memory alloys and the design and production ferroelectric sensors for properties characterization of stem cells used in bone regenration. They also study the modification and functionalization of metallic surfaces through laser technology and the functionalization of surfaces through anti-corrosion and antiwear coatings on metals.
